Materials for Custom Gravity Casting Parts
Properties including strength, durability, resistance to corrosion, and thermal conductivity differ throughout materials. The best quality and dependability of the final product can be guaranteed by choosing the appropriate material for gravity casting.
Magnesium
Magnesium and magnesium-aluminum alloys have a very high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent machinability, which is commonly used with gravity casting due to their low density, very high strength-to-weight ratio, and excellent machinability.
Aluminum Alloys
Aluminum and its broad range of alloys are the most commonly exploited materials for gravity casting due to their relatively low melting point, good fluidity when molten, relatively low cost, and favorable mechanical properties in the finished product.
Cast Irons
Cast iron is appreciated for its low raw material cost, toughness, and excellent wear resistance. It also offers good heat resistance and vibration-damping properties.
Copper Alloys
Copper alloys are widely used in gravity casting, particularly for parts requiring good electrical conductivity or excellent thermal conductivity.
Wall Thickness: 0. 75 mm
Lead Time: 3 days
Tolerances: ±0. 01mm
Max part size: 200 x 80 x 100 cm
Zinc
Zinc is widely used in gravity casting due to its relatively low melting points, very low viscosity in the melt, and the naturally good surface finish it produces.
Surface Finishes for Gravity Casting
NOBLE can help improve the surface qualities of your products by offering a diverse range of surface finishes. Surface finishes on your customized parts aim to improve their appearance, surface hardness, and roughness, chemical and corrosion resistance, and so on. They also aid in the concealment of any visible tool marks from areas cut with live tooling. Here are some of your best options.
Anodizing
Anodizing improves corrosion resistance, enhancing wear resistance and hardness, and protecting the metal surface. Widely used in mechanical parts, aircraft, and automobile parts, precision instruments, etc.
Materials: Aluminum
Color: Clear, black, grey, red, blue, gold.
Texture: Smooth, matte finish
Powder Coating
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.
Materials: Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: Black, any RAL code or Pantone number
Texture: Gloss or semi-gloss
Electroplating
Electroplating can be functional, decorative or corrosion-related. Many industries use the process, including the automotive sector, in which chrome-plating of steel automobile parts is common.
Materials: Aluminum, steel, Stainless Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: Smooth, Glossy finish
Polishing
Polishing is the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface, either through physical rubbing of the part or by chemical interference. The process produces a surface with significant specular reflection, but in some materials is able to reduce diffuse reflection.
Materials: Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: Glossy
Brushing
Brushing is a surface treatment process in which abrasive belts are used to draw traces on the surface of a material, usually for aesthetic purposes.
Materials: ABS, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Steel
Color: N/A
Texture: Satin

Gravity Casting FAQs
Gravity casting is among the oldest known processes for fabricating metals and metal alloys. It involves the pouring of molten metal from a crucible into a mold under only the force of gravity, without the use of pressurized gases, vacuums, or centrifugal force.
Gravity casting is the process of pouring molten metal into steel or cast iron molds where there is no force other than gravity. Once the metal has solidified the mold is opened and the casting is taken out. As they come from metal molds it offers very good dimensional accuracy which is consistently repeatable.
There are a lot of advantages associated with gravity die casting, including The process is used to create typically high-quality castings, characterized by good surface finish, good repeatability, and fair-to-good dimensional precision.
Gravity Casting allows for heat treatment and offers a more cost-effective approach for simple designs, but it may require more post-machining due to an inferior surface finish. Pressure Die Casting: If the part is complex and requires mass production, Pressure Die Casting is the better option.
Gravity Casting gives a good finish to the surface of an aluminum casting and, although more expensive at the initial tooling stage, these early costs are offset with larger batch production, as the unit cost falls further as larger volumes are produced.
