What is Silicone Injection Molding?

Using liquid silicone as the raw material, liquid silicone is injected into the mold using an injection molding machine, and after additional steps involving heating and cooling, the finished product is created. In comparison to solid silicone, liquid silicone is odorless, safe, and ecologically friendly. It is often referred to as liquid silicone rubber. Liquid silicone injection molding is a straightforward process; it does not require the manual steps of solid silicone processing, such as dosing, refining, cutting, and laying out, which call for manual product handling or even a completely automated production line without human involvement.

How Does Liquid Silicone Injection Molding Work?

LSR parts are manually removed from the mold due to their flexible nature, which eliminates the need for ejector pins in the mold design. A CNC machining process creates a high-temperature tool that can withstand the LSR molding process. Once the tool is milled, it is polished by hand according to customer specifications, providing six standard surface finish options.

The final tool is then loaded into a state-of-the-art LSR-specific injection molding press that is precisely geared to ensure accurate shot size control, resulting in consistently high-quality LSR parts. LSR is permanently molded once it is set as a thermosetting polymer, unlike thermoplastics that can be melted and remolded. Once the production run is complete, the parts, or the initial sample run, are promptly boxed and shipped.
